Everyone needs a certain amount of light, especially during the (often bleak) Northern European winter. Scientific evidence has long suggested that it can have enormous benefits on our well-being.
Every year more and more people are choosing to spend their Christmas holidays in the sun. Some of the top destinations include; Spain, the Canary and Balearic Islands, Greece and the Greek Islands, France, India, Turkey, Portugal, Florida and Italy.
For the English, the Canaries have always been the number one winter sun destination and a popular choice when it comes to spending Christmas abroad.
Although ideally a time of rest and relaxation, Christmas is often one of the most stressful and hectic periods of the year. Most people need a holiday after it; some people just take a holiday instead of it.
Christmas in the sun is a much simpler affair. Instead of vegetating on the sofa, watching dreadful TV, hungover and bloated for days, you’ll probably be outdoors enjoying the sun, sea, fresh air and light.
Nowadays, driven mainly by commercialism, Christmas has perhaps lost its human appeal. The more people are beginning to realise this, the more they are looking for alternatives to the traditional Christmas routines.
Along with August, the Christmas period and New Year’s Eve have become the busiest times of the year for UK tour operators.
Top Winter Sun Destinations
Spain & the Canary Islands
Spain has everything – sun, sea, beaches, snow, mountains, culture, art and excellent nightlife. But is it warm in winter?
Not as warm as most people think. In the south of Spain and on the Balearic Islands, temperatures rarely rise above 15 degrees Celsius (59F), so it’s similar to late April in the UK – not really very hot. It can however be very sunny and this makes all the difference.
The Canary Islands, on the other hand, get year round sunshine as well as year round warmth. Even the sea stays warm (well, luke-warm).
These paradise isles are said to have the “perfect” climate – never too hot and certainly never too cold. Daily average temperatures are about 22 degrees Celsius (72F). During the winter, there’s over 6 hours sunshine per day.
Water temperatures reach up to a cosy 24°C in summer and a fresh 20°C in winter. So, for water sports fans, you can go surfing in January in just a short wetsuit.
France
The French are famous for their enjoyment of life. Good food and good wine are an important part of everyday living for most French people. Along with the many beautiful beaches a vast green countryside, this is one of the country’s main attractions – the lifestyle.
The sunniest place in France during the winter months is the Cote d’Azur. Home to many of the world’s rich and famous, the Cote d’Azur (Azure Coast) includes the French Riviera and stretches all the way to the Italian border.

Portugal’s Atlantic coast (The Algarve) has some superb top-class resorts as well as miles and miles of untouched golden sandy beaches.

Now there’s more to Christmas than just the couch and telly…
